Ashley Roestoff shot a brilliant 69 in the final round, Roestoff overtook second-round joint leaders, King David’s James Loughnane and Kevin Stone, to win comfortably by three shots in the end at Serengeti Golf Club .
“Winning was a bit of a surprise really,” admitted a very pleased Ashley Roestoff afterwards, “I really thought Kevin and the guys would do better! I hit the ball really close on the first nine and turned in two-under on what are very tricky greens. The rest of the field were turning over par in that final round and I guess that was the difference in the end.”
Stone, who had started the 54-hole strokeplay event with an equally impressive 69 around the new Jack Nicklaus Signature design course, faltered slightly with rounds of 74 and 73 in very tough conditions – with play being halted on several occasions because of rain and approaching thunder storms.
Defending champion Michael du Toit started solidly, however, a second-round 81 pretty much put paid to any chances he may have had at retaining his title. Chris Bentley put his local knowledge of the tricky Serengeti greens to good use, finishing in an impressive fourth place behind Stone and Loughnane.
Glendower’s legendary teaching and PGA Master Professional Gavan Levenson took the senior honours, while Crizelda van Niekerk was the best of the women – who played at the same time, for the same prize money, however, getting an advantage of just 10 percent less distance.
And then, of course, there was the Serengeti - Celebration of Golf - Golf Show, also staged at Serengeti during the weekend. For the PGA, the PGA Learning Centre, which was incredibly well received, by public. It really showed what we are all about and what we are committed to achieving in South African golf. A huge thank you to all our PGA professionals who gave of their time over the weekend to promote and build the brand.
