ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER 2007
PGA members received the following deserving accolades :
PGA CLUB PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR - ROB VAN VELZEN
Joined the PGA in 1985 as the resident professional at Benoni Lake Golf Club. Over the past 22 years Rob has been involved in all aspects of the club – operating the golf shop, giving golf instruction with particular emphasis on junior coaching and recently as the Director of Golf at the club. For the past few years Rob has served as Chairman of the Gauteng section of the PGA of South Africa and in 2005 was elected to the Board of Directors of PGA of South Africa.
Respected by both his fellow professionals and club members, Rob truly upholds the code of the Association, which at all times shall mean - honesty, integrity, fair dealing and courtesy.
PGA APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR - GREG SMITH
Greg introduction to golf was with the South African Golf Foundation almost 50 years ago, right at the start of Foundation. Greg was just seven years old and the last thing anyone could have predicted was that he would begin his formal PGA training some 50 years later and then graduate as he just has, top of his class, at 56 years of age. Greg now has the driving range and golf academy at the University of Witwatersrand. You might say he has come full circle.
COMPLEAT GOLFER PGA CLUB PRO CHAMPIONSHIP - KEVIN STONE
Held at Zwartkop Country Club in May 2006, Stone won with scores of 68, 69, 70 for a total of 6-under 207, 5 strokes ahead of 2 nd place Paul Marks. This was the Kevin’s 6 th Club Pro Championship title.
PGA TEACHING PROFESSIONAL - JOHN DICKSON
Joined the PGA in 2002, John is the resident Teaching Professional at the Emberton Driving Range. Runs Junior Golf clinics in Kwa Zulu Natal . Serves on the PGA Regional Committee for Kwa Zulu Natal. John has now started a second academy at Durban Country Club.
PGA ORDER OF MERIT - PAUL MARKS
2006 saw the introduction of an overall Order of Merit for Club Professionals. The points system covered all pro am events throughout the year, both national and regional and the hotly contested series was eventually won by Paul Marks from Germiston CC.
CONTRIBUTION TO GOLF - SID BREWS
PGA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - DALE HAYES In addition to the other awards given at the Compleat Golfer Annual Awards Dinner this year, the PGA, for the first time ever, instituted a new award, to be given when appropriate to a deserving member for his lifetime contribution to the PGA specifically and, more generally, to the game of golf. The first recipient of this award was Dale Hayes.
